Why You Should Do the KonMari Method

Why You Should Do the KonMari Method

Over a year ago I decided to apply The Kon Mari Method to my life, and it has been one of the best things I've done. A coworker/friend was currently doing it in their apartment and recommended The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up by Marie Kondo. The whole purpose of the KonMari Method is to get rid of clutter and only possess items in your home or apartment that bring you happiness.

The whole process was not easy. I first read the book before starting anything then the dreadful task of getting rid of things I thought I needed. Long story short, I had five or six huge trash bags of clothes and other items that either didn't bring me happiness, were on their last leg and needed to be thrown out, or have not been used in the past year. If you want to go through the whole experience of the KonMari Method, I recommend you take a weekend to read the book and start your journey.

Does it Work

Now the big question is, do you keep it up. Kondo goes over this and says that you will see the room so neat and tidy that you won't need to do it again. At first, I thought, oh whatever I am going to need to re-do this whole process next year. To my surprise, I'm on my second year since I adopted the KonMari Method and I haven't had to do it. I now shop mindfully, only keep things that bring me happiness, and have gotten in the habit of putting things where they are supposed to be.

I know it sounds crazy, but even after a long and tiring night of going out with friends I still put my purse in the same spot where I designated where all my bags will go. After using any nail products, I still put them back in my bottom right drawer of my dresser. Now I'm not saying my room is never a mess or there are never clothes on my floor because I am not a robot and can't be program to act like one. I still fold all my clothes by the KonMari Method guidelines (yes even every single one of my underwear), and organize my clothes by color and category in my closet.

My Final Thoughts

The book says,

If you use the right method and concentrate your efforts on eliminating clutter thoroughly and completely within a short span of time, you’ll see instant results that will empower you to keep your space in order ever after.

As I mentioned before, I don't always put things where they are supposed to go right away (ahem, mainly my clothes). For the most part, every day without thinking I do mindfully eliminate clutter. I do spend more time in my room than I did in the years before because it's now cluttered free. I am now able to relax without worrying about pesky things lying around or papers falling out of books, etc.

Now that I gave you my take on the KonMari Method I hope you go and either buy the book or download it. I honestly believe this is the ultimate spring cleaning list that will last and improve throughout the years. Here are some useful links you should check out.
